From April 10th to 16th, hosted by the Institute of Space Science (ISS) Shandong University, and co-organized by Institute of Space Physics & Applied Technology of Peking University, the 7th IRIS International Symposium was held at Shandong University, Weihai (SDUW). More than 100 experts and students from mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, India, the USA, Norway and France attended this symposium.
Mr. TianHui, Researcher from Peking University, acted as the Chairman of the Science Organizing Committee of the Symposium, and Dr. Song Hongqiang, from SDUW School of Space Science and Physics, was the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee. The symposium mainly included the following three parts—Firstly, engaging the core members Prof. Mats Carlsson, Prof. ViggoHansteen and Dr.Tiago Pereira from IRIS team of University of Oslo, Dr. Joel Allred from NASA and Mr. TianHui to teach technical terms including Solar UV spectrum diagnosis, IRIS scientific data analysis, Theory of Radiative Transfer, quiet solar atmosphere and numerical simulation of flare related to the scientific goal of IRIS and so on. Secondly, Prof. Wenda Cao from BBSO, Prof. Jongchulhae from Seoul National University, Dr. Joten Okamoto from National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, A.P. Cheng Xin from Nanjing University and XuYa, Associate Research Fellow from Yunnan Astronomical Observatory respectively introduced some solar observation equipment like NST, HINODE, ONSET and NVST as well as discussed the joint observation and data exchanges among the equipment mentioned and the IRIS satellite. Thirdly, this symposium provided a platform for scholars of solar physics in Asia to exchange information and share research results relevant to IRIS. At the symposium, Dr. Bart De Pontieu, Head of the IRIS team, delivered a fascinating speech to attendees of the meeting via video connection, expressing his wish that IRIS could work closely with solar observation apparatus in Asia.
Dr. Bart De Pontieu from LMSAL, Dr. Liu Wei, and Professors (including Xia lidong, Chen yao and Li Bo) from SDUWSchool of Space Science and Physicscontributed to the success of this symposium with useful suggestions. It was a fruitful meeting, during which researchers and experts from ISS of SDUW held academic and cooperative exchanges.
IRIS is a small scientific exploration satellite of NASA, with a spectrum and imaging observation equipment of high resolution, whose main goal is to understand the energy transfer and dissipation mechanism in solar atmosphere. Since its launch in 2013, IRIS has provided a great deal of observation data of high quality in global solar/space physics, greatly boosting the research on the chromosphere, the transition region and the corona. In order to expand the applied area of IRIS data in solar/space physics and maximize its potential scientific value, IRIS team has helped boost its education and popularizing by holding six scientific symposiums in the US, Europe, India, etc. The introduction and exchanges of IRIS data analytical method and research progress has brought into positive effect. This seventh symposium will be held in Weihai city based on the decision made by the IRIS teamin October 2015. It aimed at meeting the demands of solar/space physics researches from Asia, especially from China and Korea and it took the Science Organizing Committee and the Local Organizing Committee six monthspreparing for this Symposium.
