Recently, the “CWTS Leiden Ranking 2016” was released by Leiden University, Holland. It includes 842 global universities. Shandong University ranks 9th among Chinese mainland universities and 56th among global universities.
Among the Chinese mainland universities in the ranking, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University are among the top two and rank 4th and 6th worldwide respectively, which are in the world's top ten. Other Chinese mainland universities in top ten are Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Sichuan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shandong University and Jilin University.
The result of the ranking is based on the indicator of each university’s academic publications rather than their comprehensive performance. Based on data of publications on Web of Science from 2011 to 2014, the ranking evaluate global universities according to their number of papers published and cited as the top 1%, 10% and 50% in their professional fields. According to Web of Science, the number of SDU’s publications is 8800 from 2011 to 2014, among which 608 papers are in top 10% of the most cited papers, accounting for 6.9% of the top 10% .
