Delegation of SDU Visited Virginia Tech

From October 18 to 20, Cao Shengyuan, the Chief Accountant of SDU, led a delegation to visit Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State UniversityVirginia Tech. Timothy Sands, President of Virginia Tech, Thanassis Rikakis, Executive Vice President and Provost, Karen DePauw, Vice President and Dean for Graduate Education as well as Guru Ghosh, Vice President for Outreach and International Affairs met with the delegation.

During the visit, Timothy Sands expressed his expectation thatfor the implementation of the joint education program by the two universities. He also looked forward to the visit of be successful and SDU President Zhang Rong to visit Virginia Tech next month, and sign thewhen the cooperation agreement will be signed next month.

In the meeting, Thanassis Rikakis extended the congratulations on the opening of the Qingdao Campus campus of SDU. He also held that the Joint College to be established on the Qingdao Campus campus by the two universities would be be of great significantce, which because it will would be beneficial topromote the internationalization of Virginia Tech and help SDU introduce quality educational resources in response to the call of the Chinese government, thus bringing mutual benefits and win-win results forto both universities.

Cao Shengyuan appreciated Thanassis Rikakis’s support for the Joint College and looked forward to taking the development opportunity of the Qingdao Campus campus to launch the program as soon as possible based onsince the two universities had the a decade-long history of cooperation between the two universities. He hoped that the college would be an example exemplar of Sino-US educational cooperation, which could cultivate international talents for both countries and provide a platform for in-depth cooperation of scientific research cooperation.

From October 19 to 20, the two sides held several work meetings about the educational cooperation. The delegation of SDU and the group led by Karen DePauw and Guru Ghosh went into the details of cooperation agreements and reached a consensus on such specific issues as financial budget, student cultivation, academic standard, staff recruitment, teacher training and school-running space, etc.

During the visit, the delegation had a meeting with SDU students who are studying in Virginia Tech and Virginia Tech students who had studied in or visited SDU.

The delegation also visited the College of Architecture and. Urban Studies of Virginia Tech and had an in-depth discussion with the Dean Jack Davis about the ideas of designing concept of the Joint College. After that, the delegation visited the Laboratory laboratory of the College of Engineering, the Llaboratoritory of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and students’ dormitories.

Karl Markgraf, Associate Vice President of Virginia Tech, heads of related departments of Virginia Tech, and staff from the Department of International Affairs of SDU attended these events.
