Shandong University Joins hands with Harvard Medical School in Launching Medical Education Program

The Shandong International Healthcare Talents Training Center and SDU-Harvard Medical School Education Program Opening Ceremony was held in Shandong University on June 28.

Li Shouxin, Secretary of CPC Shandong University Committee, and Xi Yan, Director of Health and Family Planning Commission of Shandong Province, attended the ceremony and unveiled the nameplate of Shandong International Healthcare Talents Training Center together. Han Shenghao, Vice President of SDU, addressed the ceremony on behalf of the university. Hou Junping, Secretary of the Party and Labour Union of Cheeloo College of Medicine, SDU and Ajay K. Singh, Associate Dean of Harvard Medical School (HMS) and expert of global education, unveiled the nameplate of SDU-Harvard Medical School Education Center.

At the ceremony, Xi Yan introduced the international cooperation of Shandong Province in medical and health services, and required the training center to conduct trainings of administrative officials and staff in the health system of Shandong Province, with the view of cultivating medical talents with international vision.

Han Shenghao indicated that the medical school of SDU, founded in 1864, was the origin of higher medical education in modern China, the international teaching system and methods of which were inherited till today. Joining hands with HMS, who ranks first consistently in American medical schools, and establishing the SDU-Harvard Medical School Education Center represented the achievements of SDU in the cooperation with other internationally renowned universities and the Double First-rate construction.

Ajay K. Singh said that Shandong Province, with its economic and talent strength, has considerable potential in the medical area. HMS values the cooperation with Shandong, and hopes it can promote medical talents training, stimulate scientific and technological innovation, and improve hospital management, clinical research and the quality of medical service.

After the ceremony, Ajay K. Singh gave a report on the latest development and cooperation of the global medical education. Meanwhile, Robin J. Wheatley, Executive Director of Global Education of HMS reviewed the history of cooperation with China in education, and introduced the plan for future educational cooperation with Shandong Province. Wang Fengshan, Deputy Director of the Cheeloo College of Medicine, made a review and prospected on the internationalization of the college's clinic medical education and introduced the international training programs to be launched by the two centers in the near future.

Over 200 participants including heads from the Health and Family Planning Commission of Shandong Province and prefecture-level cities, directors from top-class hospitals in Shandong Province and representatives from the Cheeloo College of Medicine and HMS attended the event.

Harvard Medical School launched the "CLIMB Initiative", the China Leadership in Medicine — Bridge with Harvard program in March 2015 and has been committed to popularize its talent training model in China. During the visit to SDU in August 2015, the HMS delegation believed that SDU is expected to become the base in north and east China for the promotion of the HMS training model. In April 2016, Chen Zijiang, Vice President of SDU and Director of the Cheeloo College of Medicine, led a delegation to visit the Harvard Medical School, where the two sides reached a consensus on in-depth exchanges and cooperation. In November 2016, HMS’s CLIMB program was officially launched in SDU.
