Guo Xinli, the Secretary of Party Committee, Shandong University, met with Mr. Fan a bit earlier. In his speech, Mr. Fan talked about Chinese painting, philosophy and poetry in a systematic manner, which demonstrates the magnificent development of Chinese traditional culture and civilization. He also interpreted the width of Chinese cultural spirit and the strong power of Chinese culture from the perspectives of Chinese philosophical concepts, the course of Chinese traditional culture, the phonological enchantment of verbal language and the emotional expression of Chinese art of painting and calligraphy.
As Mr. Fan mentioned, we are confident in Chinese traditional culture, because Chinese painting has a cultural accumulation of over four thousand years. He called upon all the SDU students to combine with their own academic career so that they could carry forwardfinetraditional Chineseculture by action.
In his report, Mr. Fan said that if a person had no noble character, he or she could not create any delicate picture, based on his own creation experience in painting portraits. Thus, he enlightened students to study and reflect persistently so that they could improve their works. When it came to reading, with an example of his determination to read a part of Imperial Collection of Four, Mr. Fan instructed students to cherish their youth and read classic literature systematically to enrich themselves constantly with traditional culture and spirit.
Professor Liu Dajun summarized Mr. Fan's academic report, speaking highly of his opinion of Chinese cultural confidence theory and encouraging students to remain true to their original aspiration as well as studying diligently so that they could make a contribution to the development of Chinese culture. After the seminar, Mr. Fan presented a piece of theme-script calligraphy inscribed by himself as a gift to the School of Fine Arts.
