May Fourth Movement, which occurred exactly a century ago, has been regarded as an important milestone in China's modern history. A core issue in this period of time is how to assess and deal with the relation between Chinese traditional culture, represented by Confucianism, and the Western civilization. This issue is still of great significance at present. In this regard, the 8th Humanities Symposium, under the theme of "the value and modern development of Confucianism: in memory of the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement", was held by Journal of Literature, History and Philosophy in Shandong University. During the conference, Journal of Literature, History and Philosophy and China Reading Weekly jointly introduced "China's Top 10 Developments of 2018 for Humanities".
This forum included discussions on various topics, such as "ethic awareness" during the May Fourth Movement and the modern transformation of Chinese culture, opportunities for revaluation and development of Confucianism during the May Fourth Movement, "literary revolution" and the changes and paradigm of modern Chinese literature, and the review and outlook of May Fourth Movement connotation. The participants held that at the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement, the academia should rethink the relations between ancient and modern times as well as China and the West, which was proposed by the May Fourth Movement and New Culture Movement. Those discussions were of paramount importance for Chinese people in realizing the reality, remembering the past and planning the future.
More than 40 scholars from Peking University, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Nankai University, Sichuan University, Xiamen University and Shandong University, etc. attended the symposium.
Since 2008, based on its research on Humanities,Journal of Literature, History and Philosophy has held the Humanities Symposium for eight times, making it a national academic flagship activity.
