The School of Medicine and the University of Toronto jointly launched the undergraduate student summer exchange program in 2010. Until now, around 20 outstanding students of the School of Medicine have participated in this Exchange Program to University of Toronto to further their study.
Shandong University signed the agreement of cooperation with the University of Toronto in June this year. On this strong basis for cooperation, the School of Medicine grasped the chance and to take an active role in furthering the cooperation and exchange of teachers and students from the two universities.
During the summer vacation this year, six undergraduate students from the Department of Biological Science at the University of Toronto participated in the program and came to the School of Medicine at SDU. They went on fields trips to six laboratories: heredity, immunity, biochemistry, anatomy, pathology and psychology. They also participated in scientific projects with their own supervisors, attended academic seminars and had classes once a week. After this program, each of them was asked to summarize their results and hand in a report.
In the meantime, seven students selected by the School of Medicine at SDU took part in the 2012 Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), University of Toronto. They received training in well-known laboratories, participated in high-level scientific research abroad and experienced a different method for nurturing talent which allowed them to enhance their own abilities in scientific research and English. During the time of this program, teachers and scientific researchers have been acting as a bridge between the students.
In order to make this summer program successful and help students adjust to the foreign research environment, more than 20 students who were selected by the School of Medicine in the summer vocation received training in the school’s laboratories and may have the chance to participate in the summer exchange program of University of Toronto next year.
