Recently, in order to push forward the celebrations for the 110th anniversary of Shandong University, promote cultural development project, hold high level academic activities, promote the development of campus culture, and to constantly improve the academic influence and social publicity, the School of Nursing made plans to carry out a series of academic activities.
The first academic lecture was held on October 11th by Dr. Walter Edward Palmer from the University of North Carolina entitled "Fall Prevention in Community Dwelling Older Adults". The Dean of School of Nursing Lou Fenglan, representatives from the teaching hospital, school faculty members, and all the postgraduates attended the public lecture.
Dr. Palmer's report provided new visions for geriatric nursing research. During the lecture, Dr. Palmer firstly introduced the situation of aging population growth, and a series of significant health problems in the elderly such as arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, frailty, depression, dementia, and tumble. Then, Dr. Palmer proceeded to give a detailed introduction on risk factors of tumble in the elderly, including balance lost, reduced sensory input, delayed reaction time, muscle weakness, poor vision, hearing loss, environment hazards, improper footwear, reduced cognitive function, fear of falling and inactivity. Later, Dr. Palmer presented the teachers and students with the research results of the fall prevention and interventions. Finally, he referred to the risk evaluation of tumble in the elderly.
