Prof. Palmer from the University of North Carolina Lectures at the School of Nursing

Recently, a welcome ceremony was held by the School of Nursing for Prof. Mary H. Palmer from the University of North Carolina (UNC). Lou Fenglan, Dean of School of Nursing addressed the audience and awarded the agreement of employment to Prof. Palmer. The ceremony was attended by representatives of teachers as well as new postgraduates.

Lou explained that Prof. Palmer was a distinguished doctoral tutor of SDU and a major lecturing professor of the project “Internationalization of School of Nursing”. This project aimed at introducing advanced nursing theories and methods, with the aim of enhancing the international exchange and cooperation in this field.

During her stay in SDU, Prof. Palmer plans to teach in English in order to help teachers and students to better comprehend the status quo of the their major, whilst also raising the bar on their academic study and English level in this field.

Prof. Wang Kefang, who is responsible for this project, expressed her honor at having the opportunity to work with Prof. Palmer and to conduct research in academic areas of interest. She hoped that the students could cherish this opportunity to improve their professional skills and academic level.

Zhang Xuekun, the president of Postgraduates Union of Nursing School, gave a speech on behalf of all postgraduates, extending a warm welcome to Prof. Palmer and showed their resolution to do an excellent job on their study.

Prof. Palmer expressed her pleasure to exchange ideas with professors here and co-teach the evidence-based nursing (EBN) with teachers from SDU. She also introduced the status quo of EBN and encouraged students to use them in the clinical trials in order to promote the development of EBN. After the welcoming ceremony, Prof. Palmer gave a three-hour lecture to the 2012 grade postgraduates. The postgraduates were high strongly interested in her lecturing, especially in the group discussion section, and the lecture proved a great success. Prof. Palmer will give lectures in the School of Nursing for 2 months and take charge of some courses for both undergraduates and postgraduates.

Prof. Mary H. Palmer is an academician of American Academy of Nursing Science, a distinguished professor of University of North Carolina and the temporary deputy dean of the National Institute on Geriatrics. Now, she serves as the associate editor-in-chief of the American Geriatrics Society, an editorial board member of the gerontic nursing and clinical geriatrics and member of the Gerontological Society of America and the American Geriatrics Society.
