Alongside the permanent exhibitions, there are also temporary exhibitions of various themes. In addition to exhibits, the museum also serves as research and teaching center, providing courses in archaeology, anthropology, conservation, and museum studies. The Joint International Research Laboratory of Environmental and Social Archaeology is also based in the building.

The moral education base for the Middle School Attached to Shandong University was established at our museum in 2010. In May 2014, our museum was awarded as "Shandong Provincial Social Science Popularization Education Base" and "2014 Shandong Provincial Excellent Social Science Popularization Education Base". In 2018, we were rated as second-class national museum. In 2020, Shandong University museum was selected into the list of first-level national museums, becoming one of the only two university museums in the first-level national museums, and the only first-level national museum of history and archaeology among other universities.

As a campus culture practice base and window for publicity, our museum gives full play to its major function of cultural education through hosting various activities each year. We are always ready to serve the public, especially student, alumni, academic community and honored guests.
