Six public specialist schools in Shandong province were merged and subsequently the Shandong Provincial University was established in Jinan city in 1926.

The National Qingdao University was established on Sept 20, 1930. Yang Zhensheng was appointed as president by the Kuomintang government.
1932
The National Qingdao University was renamed the National Shandong University in Qingdao, with Zhao Taimou as president in 1932.
1946
The National Shandong University reopened in Qingdao in 1946, with Zhao Taimou as president once more.
1951
Shandong University merged with East China University in 1951 and retained its name of Shandong University.
1958
Shandong University was administered by Shandong province and moved to Jinan, the province's capital, in October 1958.
1974
Shandong University resumed its original administrative structure in 1974 and the Shandong University of Science and Technology was abolished.
